The White Moon and Red Moon Cycle

In ancient cultures women would have bled on the new moon and ovulated when the moon was at its peak energy in the full moon. The moon represents our egg. Women are yin in nature and represented by the most yin hormone Estrogen. Estrogen builds from day 1 of the cycle up until ovulation, which should correspond to the moon going from a new phase to waxing. Ovulation should occur when the moon reaches its peak yin energy and becomes full. Then after ovulation estrogen declines and progesterone rises giving birth to the more yang side of the cycle, with estrogen declining the moon’s energy also declines until it becomes a new moon again and the cycle repeats.

The White Moon Cycle

Ovulating with the full moon corresponds to The White Moon cycle. When the moon is at its full energy it is related to the most fertile aspect of a woman’s life. The fertile power of a woman is at its fullest, ancient society saw this the best time for conception as the woman was in the “mothering” phase of her life, giving her energy to her family and children.

The Red Moon Cycle

The Red Moon Cycle is more mysterious and corresponds to when the woman menstrual bleed occurs at the full moon. Her ovulation occurs at the new moon, the darkest point in the lunar cycle. Her creative energy directed more towards inner development and knowledge. These women were seen as the wisdom keepers, counsellors, witches and midwives. Men feared this cycle more as they saw it as more powerful and uncontrollable force of energy for a woman to use her creativity in this way.

Throughout a woman’s life she will weave in and out of the White Moon and Red Moon Cycle depending on what area of life she is focusing on, giving to her community or giving to her own family. Not living with the natural cycles of life can take us out of this natural order of bleeding and ovulating with the moon, but we can do something to help bring our body back into balance. In ancient society we were more in tune with nature and its cyclical rhythms. We worked outdoors, slept outdoors, more importantly there was no artificial light or street lights, so we would have used the moon and stars to navigate.

  • Reduce electronic device usage especially using your phone at night. If using your phone at night use blue light blocker glasses or an app on your phone to stop blue light.
  • Use more candles. Eat dinner at night by candle light.
  • Use red infra-red light bulbs in the home and especially in the bedroom.
  • Light a fire or use an outdoor firepit.
  • Look at the moon especially when it’s full.
  • Know your cycle and where you are in accordance with the moon phase.
